The UCL Department of Information Studies is an international centre for knowledge creation and transfer in the fields of librarianship, archives and records management, publishing, information science and digital humanities.
The department brings together academics and practitioners in these fields: our research aims to develop the understanding and insights needed to shape the emerging information environment, while elucidating and building on the historical developments that have created this environment.
We are the country's largest department of Information Studies located within one of the world's top ten universities: our teaching is built upon an international research reputation. The department is host to the UCL Centre for Digital Humanities, UCL Centre for Publishing and the Centre for Critical Archives and Records Management Studies (CCARMS).
What we do
DIS offers students a professionally grounded education, based on fundamental principles, history, context and evaluation of information, whilst also focusing on current developments in digital technology.
Students benefit from DIS facilities while they are studying here. In 2010, DIS moved to the ground floor of the newly renovated Foster Court building at the heart of UCL, representing an investment of £750,000.
A multi-modal digitisation suite was established in 2013 with £100,000 multi-Faculty funding. Students learn the information skills that they need to succeed at a senior level in the professional information environment of their choice.
Our record
We have a strong record of working with the information and cultural heritage professions, our alumni, members of the public, and the community around us. We aim to create new opportunities for our research and teaching to have impact on the world beyond academia and to create new ways for people to engage with our work, whether in physical or digital environments.
