Sharpey Physiological Scholarship

Founded in 1871 by the subscribers of the Sharpey Memorial Fund to commemorate the connection with the College of William Sharpey, Professor of Anatomy and Physiology, 1836-74

  1. The Scholarship, known as the Sharpey Physiological Scholarship, may be awarded when there is a vacancy.

  2. The Scholarship is awarded by the Council on the recommendation of the Faculty of Life Sciences.

  3. The Scholarship is primarily intended for the encouragement of research under the immediate direction of the Jodrell Professor of Physiology.

  4. The value of the Sharpey Scholarship is determined from time to time.

  5. On the vacancy occurring, the qualifications of persons eligible for appointment to the Scholarship are considered by an Adviser, or Advisers, appointed by the Faculty of Life Sciences. The Jodrell Professor of Physiology is ex officio an Adviser.

  6. The Scholar elected is a member of the staff of the Department of Physiology and will assist in the teaching work of the Department. They are considered teachers within the meaning of the College Statutes and Regulations and they are subject to the conditions of tenure laid down by the Council for teaching appointments in the College. They are encouraged and have facilities afforded them in carrying on original work on their own account, but the undertaking of such work is not an essential condition of holding the Scholarship.

  7. The Scholarship is awarded in the first instance for one session, but may be renewed from session to session on the recommendation of the Faculty of Life Sciences.

  8. Payment of the Scholarship is made in twelve instalments, monthly in arrears.

  9. Awards are subject to the provisions of the General Regulations.
