The first of a new series of UCL Institute of Origins networking events, to enhance intellectual interaction across the MAPS faculty, takes place on Wednesday 31 October, from 3-5pm at the North Cloisters UCL. The theme for the first event is "The Origins of Life".

This will be an informal meeting style, with a brief introduction, followed by a few short (10 min each) research talks representing different Origins disciplines, with time for discussion and networking over light refreshments.

The programme for the afternoon is as follows:

15.00-15.25 Arrival and refreshments
15.25-15.30 Welcome - Ofer Lahav (Vice Dean for Research, MAPS)
15.30-15.40 Introduction to MAPS - Richard Catlow (Dean of MAPS)
15.40-15.50 Introduction to the Centre for Planetary Sciences - Steve Miller (CPS Co-Director)
15.50-16.00 "Why bioenergetics is the key to the origin of life" – Nick Lane (Genetics, Evolution & Environment)
16.00-16.10 "Astrobiology: Search for life beyond Earth" - Lewis Dartnell (Institute of Origins)
16.10-16.20 "What are exoplanets made of?" - Giovanna Tinetti (Physics & Astronomy)
16.20-17.00 Networking and refreshments

During the course of the academic year we hope to hold several Wednesday afternoon meetings on selected topics.
