UCL-UCU: Strike Discussion & Organising Meeting, 1-2pm, 22 November

10 November 2022

This message is to invite you to a Strike Discussion and Organising meeting on Tuesday 22 November at 1pm.

The meeting will take palce on Zoom and a registration email will go out soon.

We will be taking questions on the action and re-initiating our Strike Committee (all members who want to participate in preparing and organising strike action).

As you will have seen, after our very successful campaign the union has a national mandate for strike action, with every UCU branch taking part in the same action and at the same time.

We need to prepare for the coming industrial action that the national union has announced for every one of the UCU branches in the UK. The action will take the following form:

  1. Action Short Of Strike (ASOS) not including marking/assessment boycott, viz working to contract, refusing to make up work lost as a result of strike action and refusing to cover for absent colleagues, from Wed. 23 November,
  2. All-out Strike days on Thurs. 24, Fri. 25, and Wed. 30 November (followed by a national demonstration at Kings Cross at 13.00),
  3. Universal marking/assessment boycott from the new year,
  4. Further strike action in February to back this up.

We need to organise the most visible and effective action we can if we are to force the employers back from their attacks on our pensions, pay, and conditions. This includes members in every department organising and running pickets/demonstrative events, or joining other picket lines/events.

Your local Departmental UCU Reps will be contacting you soon about this. If your department does not have a Rep please volunteer to be the point of contact for this action or join the strike committee.

The meeting on Thursday 22 will be online and in part to set up a Strike Committee composed of all members that would like to join in participating, organising, and spreading the action within UCL. It is important that we have as many members as possible attending this. Future Strike Cttee meetings will be in person.

It is time to turn our amazing ballot mandate into a challenge to employers: stop the destruction of our conditions and with them Higher Education or face action of a kind you have not seen before.
