UCL-TB Professors Andrew Nunn and Sir Ali Zumla receive Union Medals

29 October 2018

We are delighted to congratulate UCL-TB members Professor Andrew Nunn and Professor Sir Ali Zumla on the award to each of them of the prestigious ‘Union Medal’ 2018 by the International Union Against TB and Lung Disease (The Union), at the 49th World Conference on Lung Health.

The Union Medal is the highest honour accorded by The Union to individuals “who have made outstanding contributions to the control of tuberculosis and lung diseases by their scientific work and actions in the field’’

It is unprecedented for a single institution to be represented in this way and is a reflection of the significant contribution that UCL is making to tuberculosis, lung diseases and global health research.

Prof Andrew Nunn received his medal at the ceremony on Friday, 26th October.  The following day, Prof Nunn presented results from stage one of the groundbreaking STREAM trial, and earlier in the week had led a tribute to the late Professor Denis Mitchison, a pioneer of TB drug treatment.  Prof Sir Ali Zumla was unable to attend the meeting in person but accepted his Union medal via a pre-recorded speech.

Our warmest congratulations go too to our UKAPTB colleagues, Professor Katherine Fielding (LSHTM), who received the Scientific Prize, and Professor Bertie Squire (LSTM), who was made an Honorary Member.

Further details can be found on The Union's website, on the MRC-CTU website and on the UNZA-UCLMS website.
