Data roles

We all use data but what are our roles?

The formal names for our roles are given below.  We can hold one, or more, of these roles.

Data Owner

Data held by the University is broken down into different data domains.  Each domain has an accountable owner who ensures the data is managed according to the University's requirements and policies.  They make decisions about the use of the data from the domain and take responsibility at a senior level.

You can read more about the role of data owner.

They nominate one or more data stewards to carry out the day-to-day responsibilities.

Data Steward

This is the subject matter expert within each area who understands the data and can make improvements to its quality and management.  They work on behalf of the data owner.

You can read more about the role of data steward.

Data Producer

If you import or enter data onto a University system, or you create data of your own, you are a data producer.

Data User

Most of us are data users at some time.  If you need any type of data to do your job you hold this role.
