UCL at the British Medical Association 

UCL Contributes to the BMA Mind Garden events, May and June 2016


As part of the Chelsea Fringe Festival and Open Squares Weekend in London, the British Medical Association hosted several garden events in collaboration with UCL and the Charles Dickens Museum, focusing on the theme of mental health, gardens, and medicine.

The events were held at the BMA Headquarters in Tavistock Square, London where attendees enjoyed tours of the BMA garden and engaged with researchers and experts.

26 May 2016, 4:00 - 6:30 PM
 - Gardening and Plant Medicines for Mental and Social Health (chaired by Dr. William Bird, MBE)

  •  4:00: Complimentary cocktails in the garden; Welcome (Daniela Sikora, BMA Garden and Mark Stuart, BMJ)
  •  4:30: Medicinal Plants and the Mind (Prof. Michael Heinrich, UCL)
  •  5:15: Using Gardening to Improve Health and Transform Lives (Sean Morrissey, Thrive UK)
  • Followed by discussion and networking in the BMA Garden until 6:30 pm close.


9 June 2016, 4:00 - 6:30 PM 
- Green prescribing: Promoting Health Through Gardens and Lifestyle (chaired by Dr. Fiona Godlee, Editor-in-Chief of the BMJ)

  • 4:00: Complimentary cocktails in the garden; Welcome (Daniela Sikora, BMA Garden and Mark Stuart, BMJ)
  • 4:30: Prescribing Activity to Improve Health and Well-being (William Bird, MBE)
  • 5:15: Gardens to Improve Health- Uniting Patients, Providers, and the Community (Lambeth GP Food Co-Op)
  • Followed by complimentary botanical-themed cocktails, discussion and networking in the BMA Garden until 6:30 pm close.


18 June 2016, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
 - The BMA Mind Garden Open Squares Weekend

  • 1:00: Medicinal Plants and the Mind (Prof. Michael Heinrich, UCL)
  • 2:00: Fever Trees and the Food of the Gods: Case Studies in Popular Botanical Medicines (Marianne Jennifer Datiles, UCL)
  • 3:00: The Quality and Safety of Herbal Supplements (Dr. Tony Booker, UCL)
  • Accompanied all day by an exhibit presented by the Charles Dickens Museum, yoga and meditation sessions, and discussions with the Lambeth GP Food Co-Op.


The BMA Mind Garden Series is organised by Daniela Sikora (BMA Garden) and Mark Stuart (BMJ Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Clinical Lead).
