A message from the Dean

9 March 2022

I had anticipated writing a message to mark the second anniversary of the first COVID-19 lockdown that would remark on the hopeful signs that the pandemic is finally truly receding. Indeed, life in Bloomsbury has been returning to an approximation of how things were back at the start of 2020, and there has been a real buzz of activity and energy on the UCL campus once again.

However recent events in Ukraine mean that the 2020s continue to place profoundly destabilising challenges before us, and indulging in optimistic musings feels misplaced.

SHS is a global community of staff and students, and many of us have family roots, personal connections, and research collaborators in Eastern Europe. In this context, I would encourage everyone reading this to reach out to anyone in the Faculty or their networks who might be impacted by the news from Ukraine, to ensure that we are supporting each other as best we can, as we have done over the past two years. I have been really pleased to see that SHS academics are already providing insightful analysis of the geopolitical and humanitarian situation.

My personal hope is that we are, each in our own way, able to engage our humanity and our intellectual resources to promote community, peace and security in the difficult times ahead.

Support for staff and students
