Gender and Sexuality in the US Election

About the event

Issues related to gender and sexuality have become a major focus in the 2024 US presidential election – from sexual orientation and gender identity, to gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights.

Join us online for the next event in our series hosted by UCL Social & Historical Sciences, where our experts are unpacking the pressing issues of this historic election year.

Our panel of speakers will explore:

• LGBT issues and the political climate with the Republican party honing in on transphobic policies,
• the role of the so-called “Mama Bears” - conservative women who have become politically activated since 2020 - and how they can shape this election, and,
• the US Supreme Court and the uncertain future of rights around bodily autonomy after the 2024 election.

• Professor Jonathan Bell is Professor of American History (UCL Institute of the Americas)
• Chair: Dr Rebecca Jennings is Associate Professor in Modern Gender (UCL History) and Vice-Dean Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (UCL Faculty of Social & Historical Sciences)

About the series

This is the second event in our 2024 series hosted by UCL Social & Historical Sciences, where our experts are unpacking the pressing issues of this historic election year.

Our first event, 'Democracy: Past, Present and Future', took place in March. Catch up on the recording.

Subsequent events in the series will cover topics including climate change, and media and populism. The series will culminate with a reflection session in November, examining these themes in light of the election outcome.
