Working with Selective Mutism: Extension Course (Module 4)

This advanced one-day course considers how to support children and young people with selective mutism (SM) alongside other conditions.

You'll consider conditions which frequently occur alongside SM and your role and remit when supporting these individuals.

You'll discuss how to adapt standard assessment and intervention techniques, as well as additional management techniques and medication.

Topics include:

  • additional speech and language difficulties
  • autism spectrum disorder
  • behavioural issues
  • separation anxiety
  • social anxiety disorder
  • other fears and phobias

This study day builds on the techniques covered in the foundation course and the intermediate course.

This course is run by the UCL Division of Psychology and Language Sciences (PaLS).

Who this course is for

This course is suitable for professionals and support workers from educational, health and mental health backgrounds. Case workers and therapists working with adults are also welcome.

You'll need to have completed module 1 (foundation course) and module 2 (intermediate course) before attending this course. 

You'll need to bring with you a copy of the second edition of The Selective Mutism Resource Manual (Johnson and Wintgens, 2016, Speechmark Publications) or purchase one on the day by prior arrangement.

Course content

Topics covered will include:

  • assessment and management of speech and language difficulties (including learning English as an additional language)
  • autism spectrum disorders: assessment, diagnosis and management
  • behavioural issues commonly associated with selective mutism
  • mental health issues: implications and possible involvement of child / adult mental health services
  • identification and management of other anxieties and phobias
  • advising and training other professionals and agencies


You'll receive a certificate of attendance at the end of the course.
