Statistics and Research Methods: an Introduction (Online, Self Paced)

Overview

This online, self-paced course will give you a comprehensive introduction to research methods and statistics.

It covers all areas of statistics, from data collection through to interpretation. You'll learn about study design, data types, graphs, and choice and interpretation of confidence intervals and p-values.

It's suitable for anyone who is new to quantitative research and wants to read journal articles or conduct their own research including data collection and analysis.

This course is delivered by UCL's Centre for Applied Statistics Courses (CASC), part of the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (ICH).

Course content

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to quantitative research
  • Research question development
  • Study design, sampling and confounding
  • Types of data
  • Graphical displays of data and results
  • Summarising numeric and categorical data
  • Numeric and categorical differences between groups
  • Hypothesis testing
  • Confidence intervals and p-values
  • Parametric statistical tests
  • Non-parametric tests
  • Bootstrapping
  • Regression analysis

The focus of the course is on helping you understand the principles, rather than the mechanics of calculations. Where the details of calculations are given this is to help you understand the outcomes and limitations of the analyses. 

Teaching and structure

This is an online, self-paced course that includes:

  • full electronic notes
  • short lecture videos (recorded outside of the classroom) that follow closely with the notes
  • interactive multiple-choice quizzes for each chapter
  • extended practical exercises (with solutions) for further comprehension
  • revision materials
  • links to additional resources

Support will also be available through a forum, where you can ask questions related to the course materials.

Assessment and certificates

There are multiple-choice quizzes at the end of each chapter.

You'll be able to download a certificate once you get at least 80% on all quizzes.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • review quantitative research published in journal articles with genuine understanding of the design, methods, results and conclusions
  • undertake your own basic quantitative research from the design stage, data collection, all the way through to writing and interpretation of results

Course team

Dr Dean Langan

Dr Dean Langan

Dean works as a lecturer, jointly based within the School of Life and Medical Sciences (SLMS) and the Centre for Applied Statistics Courses (CASC) at UCL. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from University of Liverpool, a Master's degree in Medical Statistics from University of Leicester, and a PhD from University of York for his research in statistical methods for random-effects meta-analysis. He's worked as a statistician on a number of clinical trials related to stroke and myeloma at the Clinical Trials Research Unit in Leeds. His specialist areas include statistical methods for meta-analysis, R programming, clinical trial methodology and research design.
