Overview
Learn everything you need to know about prostate MRI for the diagnosis and management of patients with prostate cancer on this two-day online course for urologists and other healthcare professionals.
The prostate cancer-management pathway has moved towards image-guided diagnosis and treatment. This course will provide interactive teaching from a world-renowned faculty in prostate MRI interpretation.
It will equip you to be able to use MRI in the management of patients with prostate cancer and run an image-guided service.
This year the course will be run virtually. You will require a good and stable internet connection and access to a computer to participate
Places are limited to 50 people and there will be a waiting list in operation once this threshold has been reached.
This short course is run by staff at UCL and UCLH (University College London Hospital). It's currently the only evidence-based course shown to improve urologists' ability to interpret clinically significant prostate cancer on multiparametric MRI. (The team's findings are published in their letter in the journal European Urology).
Course content
The course will cover the following:
- The importance of prostate MRI to the urologist
- Recognising prostate anatomy on MRI
- Identifying areas suspicious for prostate cancer on multi-parametric MRI
- How to use MRI to help guide management decisions in prostate cancer patients
- Using MRI imaging to guide prostate biopsy
- PSMA-PET in the diagnosis and staging of prostate cancer.
- A dedicated expert planning session for robotic prostatectomy
- The use of MRI to plan focal therapy (e.g. HIFU, cryotherapy)
- The use of MRI after treatment (recurrence, follow-up and salvage)
- MDT collaboration for prostate cancer diagnosis and management

Course structure and teaching
The course runs over two days, with the following learning format:
- Hands-on MRI interpretation workshop with expert faculty using real prostate MRIs
- Significant time to interpret new scans with individual feedback on performance (you'll be given access to software for viewing MRI scans on your home computer)
- Virtual demonstration of image-fusion software in MRI-targeted prostate biopsy
- Lectures and case-based discussions to demonstrate the role of MRI in the diagnosis and treatment of men with prostate cancer
Due to the bandwith required to view the scans, particpiants must have:
- A strong WiFi connection (Upload speed: 200 MBPS, Download speed: 400 MBPS)
- A modern computer with the ability to join Zoom
- The latest version of Zoom software installed
CPD accreditation and certificates
12 CPD points have been accredited by the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS), and you'll receive a certificate of attendance.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course you should be able to:
- understand the importance of multi-parametric MRI interpretation for the practicing urologist
- recognise prostate anatomy on multi-parametric MRI
- identify areas suspicious for prostate cancer on multi-parametric MRI
- understand the limitations of prostate multi-parametric MRI
- recognise good and bad multi-parametric MRI scan quality and understand how to optimise this
- use multi-parametric MRI to help guide management decisions in prostate cancer patients (specifically, for the planning of robotic prostatectomy and focal therapy)
- use multi-parametric MRI to guide prostate biopsy
- understand the role of PSMA-PET in the diagnosis and staging of prostate cancer.

Course team
Dr Clare Allen
Clare qualified from Oxford University and is Consultant Radiologist at UCL with an academic interest in uro-oncology, in particular prostate MR-imaging. She has a well-developed clinical practice in dynamic contrast-enhanced MR in the prostate and is leading a team of medical physicists in further defining the role of multi-sequence MRI in diagnostic utility of prostate cancer.
Mr Veeru Kasivisvanathan
Veeru is an Associate Professor of Urology at UCL and Honorary Consultant Urologist at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is an internationally recognised expert in prostate cancer diagnosis, having led practice changing trials in this field. He led the PRECISION trial (published in the New England Journal of Medicine), which led to MRI being adopted as the first-line investigation for men with suspected prostate cancer - representing the first major change in prostate cancer diagnostics in over 30 years.
Veeru is also part of the team that runs the diagnostic MRI-targeted biopsy service at UCLH and is responsible for the multi-disciplinary team management of these patients.
Dr Alex Kirkham
Alex is Consultant Radiologist at UCLH, specialising in urological radiology. He has both a clinical and a research interest in prostate cancer imaging, in particular MRI for the detection of tumour and the assessment of ablative therapies.
Professor Caroline Moore
Caroline is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at University College Hospital, and Professor of Urology in the Department of Targeted Intervention, UCL. She leads a significant research programme at UCL, focusing on MRI-targeted prostate biopsy, active surveillance and focal therapy for prostate cancer (such as PICTURE & SmartTarget) for which she’s also involved in numerous international collaborations.
Dr Francesco Giganti
Francesco is Associate Professor of Radiology at UCL and Honorary Consultant Radiologist at UCLH. He is an expert in teaching prostate MRI for radiologists and urologists, and part of the team commissioned by EAU to deliver Europe-wide training courses. His main areas of interest in prostate MRI are image quality (PI-QUAL score), active surveillance (PRECISE score) and imaging after focal ablation (PI-FAB score).
Professor Mark Emberton
Mark is Professor of Intervention Oncology within the Division of Surgery and Dean of the Faculty of Medical Science at UCL. He's clinically active and holds the position of Honorary Consultant Urologist at University College London Hospitals NHS Trust where he works as a specialist in prostate cancer.
