Masterclass in Ocular Oncology

Overview

Ocular Oncology is a subspeciality of Ophthalmology that deals with rare tumours, including cancers of the eye. In this course, you will explore the presentation, diagnosis, and management of intraocular and ocular surface tumours. 

This course is run jointly by the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital

Course content 

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Examination and diagnostic techniques in ocular oncology. There will be a specific focus on ocular ultrasound as the primary diagnostic modality for intraocular tumours
  • Ocular surface tumours:
    • Squamous cell tumours
    • Melanocytic and lymphoid lesions
    • "No touch" tumor surgery and adjuvant treatments
  • Intraocular tumors in the iris, ciliary body and choroid:
    • Naevus, melanoma, haemangiomas and retinoblastoma
    • Management and differential diagnosis
    • Systemic management (where relevant)

Teaching and structure 

The course content is designed so that you can go through the topics and pre-recorded lectures online at your own pace. There will be an online forum for asking questions.

The course will be hosted on UCL Extend, UCL's learning platform for short courses and professional education.

Access to the course materials will end one month after the course end date. This will be listed on the course area on UCL Extend.

Certificates and assessment 

There will be a multiple-choice quiz with 20 questions at the end of the course.

A certificate of completion will issued on completion of the multiple choice quiz and course feedback form.

Ophthalmologists are eligible for self-certification of CPD points at 1 point/hour in their portfolio.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  1. Use and understand examination and diagnostic techniques in ocular oncology.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of ocular ultrasound and its use in ocular oncology.
  3. Understand how to diagnose and manage patients with ocular surface tumours including squamous cell carcinoma of the conjunctiva and conjunctival melanoma.
  4. Develop an understanding of benign and malignant conditions that can involve the iris and ciliary body. Understand how these conditions are managed.
  5. Develop an understanding of the wide range of tumours that can affect the ocular fundus. These tumours may involve retina, retinal pigment epithelium, vitreous and/or choroid. These tumours can affect patients of any age and a wide variety of management strategies exist for their treatment which the student will learn about.
