This five-day CPD course for police personnel will help equip you with the management skills required to be a leader within a modern police force.
The course draws on management lessons from the private and public sector and applies them to the modern policing environment.
It also draws on examples from the voluntary sector, which is particularly relevant given the increasing reliance of the UK police on volunteers, e.g. special constables, citizen patrols and neighbourhood watch coordinators.
The course has been developed by the Institute for Global City Policing, an independent centre based at UCL's Jill Dando Institute of Security and Crime Science.

Teaching and structure
The course will consist of:
- lectures by leading academics, experts in the field of management and experienced practitioners
- structured workshops
- group work
Each day will involve lectures, interspersed with group work or participatory activities.
In the afternoons, you'll work on a case study to apply the principles and theory that were introduced in the morning sessions.
Assessment is by a group presentation on day five of the course.
For this, you'll work in a group on a particular problem. The aim is to apply the theory and principles of leadership and management to respond appropriately to a challenging situation.

Professor Mark Evans
Mark is Deputy Chief Executive (Strategy) with the New Zealand Police. His responsibilities include the design, development and implementation of the major New Zealand Police transformation project - 'Policing Excellence: The Future'. He's worked in a range of intelligence roles, including international assignments for the UK Ministry of Defence, drafting for the UK's Joint Intelligence Committee and working in a specialist multi-agency counter-terrorism unit in Northern Ireland. He's a visiting professor at the UCL Jill Dando Institute.
Dr Nina Seppala
Nina is Deputy Director (Academic Affairs) of the School of Management at University College London (UCL). She started her career working for international organisations, including the United Nations, in the area of democracy promotion and preventive diplomacy. Since then, she's held senior roles in several business schools, leading programme and curriculum development projects, academic quality, international collaborations and liaison with business partners.
