Inclusive Education Training Programme (Level 1)

Overview

The Inclusive Education Training Programme is crafted to empower learners with the knowledge and skills to foster safer, inclusive spaces. Participants will develop practices that value diverse perspectives, enabling everyone to be their authentic selves while ensuring equitable opportunities and outcomes.

This course is run collaboratively by the Arena Centre's Inclusive Education Lead and UCL colleagues from Arena, the Student Success Office, Digital Accessibility, and the Centre for Behaviour Change.

Who this course is for

  • Staff who teach or support teaching at UCL 
  • UCL students at all levels of study

Course content

The following topics will be explored:

  • Awarding Gaps: Delve into educational disparities and experiences.  
  • Accessibility Basics: Grasp fundamental principles for an inclusive learning space. 
  • Inclusive Language: Navigate the impact of words on fostering inclusivity.  
  • Identity and Belonging: Explore the essentials of creating inclusive educational spaces.

Teaching and Structure

Level 1: Foundational Inclusivity

Embark on a transformative journey with six core 20-30 minute modules. These self-directed, asynchronous modules are carefully curated to provide a comprehensive understanding of inclusion principles. Undertaken in a prescribed sequence, these modules lay the groundwork for a profound awareness of equity and inclusivity.  

Level 2: Advancing Inclusive Practices (Coming soon)

On completing Level 1, learners can delve deeper into their inclusivity journey by engaging with Level 2 which offers self-select, specialised modules lasting 30+ minutes. The mode of delivery is flexible, encompassing both asynchronous self-directed learning and blended formats. This advanced level equips learners with specialised skills to further enhance their inclusive practices.

Certificates and assessment

Each module incorporates assessments with immediate and formative feedback. A final quiz, featuring summative feedback, ensures a comprehensive understanding of the module content. 

A certificate of participation will be available upon completion of all six level 1 modules.

Dr Manjula Patrick

Manjula is Arena’s inclusive education lead with a focus on reducing awarding gaps for marginalised students. Equity and inclusion pedagogies form the core of her work and she is an advocate for intersectional solutions to address inequity. Her work, in collaboration with diverse stakeholders, is to develop innovative, workable solutions that progress inclusive education practices.
