Educating for Sustainable Development in Schools and Universities

Overview

You'll be introduced to key issues and debates in education for sustainable development. 

This includes: 

  • an exploration of key international policies
  • models of learning
  • approaches to teaching and learning.

The creation of the course was funded by Sustainable UCL. The course is endorsed by the British Council.

Who this course is for

This course is aimed at educators around the world in schools and universities who want to improve their knowledge of education, sustainable development and climate change.

The course will support you to become more confident and able to introduce these issues into your teaching practice.

It will also be useful if you'd like to share best practice with others in a global context.

There are no entry requirements, and no course preparation is required.

Course content

On this course you'll:

  • explore the concept of education for sustainable development and related terms such as climate change education
  • engage with key issues and debates in education for sustainable development research and policy
  • investigate the key elements of, and approaches to, education for sustainable development in research and practice
  • consider a range of useful resources and examples of practice from around the world.

Course structure

You'll learn through a series of online readings, video inputs, tasks and discussions over three weeks, which take approximately three hours per week to complete.

The course is aimed at educators around the world so the timings are flexible and activities can be completed at a time that is convenient for you.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you'll have: 

  • explored the concept of education for sustainable development and related terms such as climate change education
  • engaged with key issues and debates in education for sustainable development research and policy
  • investigated the key elements of, and approaches to, education for sustainable development in research and practice
  • explored the opportunities and challenges that education for sustainable development can present for educational practitioners
  • collaborated with peers around the world to develop an awareness of diverse perspectives on, and practices of, education for sustainable development
  • assessed the range of resources which are available to support educators to incorporate education for sustainable development in their practice, including guides, approaches and learning activities
  • developed greater confidence, knowledge and skills to be able to incorporate education for sustainable development into your teaching
  • reflected on your current practice and identified how you might apply the learning from the course to your practice in the future.

Assessment

At the end of the course you'll be asked to do a short reflective piece of writing which asks how you'll take your learning from the course forward into your teaching practice.

This is not formally assessed.

Cost and certificates

This course is free, but if you pay £34 you can have unlimited access to the course and receive a FutureLearn certificate of completion at the end.

Dr Nicole Blum

Dr Nicole Blum

Nicole is Senior Lecturer in the Development Education Research Centre in the Institute of Education, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society. Nicole's key areas of teaching and research interest are focused on pedagogy and approaches to education for sustainable development, global learning and global citizenship education; climate change and education; online learning; global perspectives in higher education; and the ethnography of education. She has worked and conducted research in Costa Rica, Guatemala, India, the United States and the United Kingdom.

Dr Frances Hunt

Dr Frances Hunt

Fran is Senior Research Officer in the Development Education Research Centre in the Institute of Education, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society. Fran's research focuses on topics such as global learning, global citizenship education in schools and higher education. She is also interested in democracy in schools, human rights and student voice. Fran runs the Global Citizenship Education module on the MA in Global Learning and another short course, Global Education for Teachers. She has worked or conducted research in the UK, South Africa, Italy, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Taiwan, Ghana and India.
