Assessment and Management of Balance Disorders in Children

Overview

This three-day course is designed for all those clinicians who have a basic knowledge of vestibular assessment and rehabilitation as applied to adults but are looking to build on this foundation and develop their interest and skills in the assessment and management of children with dizziness.

Delegates will be provided with a pre-course reading list and presentations, which will maximise their learning opportunities during the course. Course materials are included in the registration fee.

The course is run by the UCL Ear Institute.

You should have some basic knowledge of assessment and management of adults with dizziness. 

Course content

This course covers a wide range of topics including:

  • Functional anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system
  • Development of normal balance function in children and common motor milestones
  • Common peripheral and central causes of dizziness in children
  • Patient and Parent Centred Interview
  • Non-vestibular causes of dizziness
  • Role and value of non-audiological tests
  • Genetics of Vestibular Disorders
  • Medical Management of the dizzy child
  • Clinical test of vestibular function
  • Physiotherapist assessment of the dizzy child
  • The frequency response of the vestibular system - which part of the vestibular system are we testing?
  • Modification of objective balance assessments when testing children and case studies
  • VEMPs and VHIT in children
  • Vestibular rehabilitation in children

Teaching and structure

The course will run over three consecutive days. Seminar-style, interactive teaching is supplemented by:

  • group exercises and class discussion
  • practical demonstrations including videos
  • case studies
  • self-directed reading and pre-reading around current structure and practice in paediatric audiology services 

Certificates and accreditation

You'll receive a certificate of attendance if you attend all three days.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the functional anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system, its role in the development of normal balance function in children, and common motor milestones.
  • Exhibit knowledge about the common peripheral and central causes of dizziness in children.
  • Proficiently understand the value and application of patient and parent-centered interviews.
  • Possess knowledge of non-vestibular causes of dizziness, recognize the role and importance of non-audiological tests, and comprehend the genetics associated with vestibular disorders.
  • Recognise the significance of medical management in the care of dizzy children.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform various clinical tests of balance, encompassing eye movement assessments, clinical tests evaluating the vestibular ocular reflex, gait analysis, assessments of static and dynamic equilibrium, and positioning tests.
  • Develop expertise in the management of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).
  • Acquire knowledge of the physiotherapist's approach in evaluating dizzy children.
  • Understand how to modify objective balance assessments appropriately when testing children.
  • Develop proficiency in conducting vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) and video head impulse tests (VHIT) in children.
  • Hone your skills in applying vestibular rehabilitation techniques for children.

Costs

The standard course fees are to be confirmed.

Payment via UCL Extend must be made no later than two weeks before the start of the course

NB: Your place on the course is not secured until payment has cleared. If you are paying via invoice, this means that a purchase order number must be provided prior to the course start.

Cancellations

If you wish to cancel your order for a course after it is accepted by us and outside of any period in which you might have a right to cancel, then the following applies.

Your cancellation must be received in writing no later than 14 days before the start of the Course. If we receive your cancellation no later than 14 days before the start of the Course we will refund any amount you have paid to us for that Course less an administration charge of 20%. No refunds will be made for cancellations made by you within 14 days of the Course date.

Dr Elwina Timehin

Dr Timehin is a Consultant Audiovestibular Physician at St. George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. In 2014 she became Clinical Lead for the Department of Audiology and Audiovestibular Medicine

Her clinical interests are in the diagnosis and management of hearing and balance disorders in both children and adults. She also has special interest Paediatric Vestibular Medicine and Bone anchored Hearing aids for both children and adults.

Paul is the MSc Deputy Course Director and acting co-Head of Education with research interests in the fields of vestibular assessment and rehabilitation, electrophysiology and acoustics
