Winners of the 2018 Spirit of SLMS Awards announced
The awards are intended to celebrate students within the UCL School of Life and Medical Sciences (SLMS) who embody the spirit of the School’s commitment to academic excellence and positive contributions to the wider community.
In 2017, nominations were sought from staff and students within the four faculties of SLMS to identify students who had shown exceptional academic achievement or had engaged in activity which had demonstrated positive impact within or outside of the UCL community.
A total of 43 nominations were received with 23 of these identified as outstanding.
The awards were made in two categories: ‘Scientific Excellence and Leadership’ and ‘Community Engagement and Citizenship’.
Dr Jenni Rodd, Reader in Experimental Psychology and academic lead of the awards said:
“It was a delight to review these nominations – an inspiring reminder of the remarkable and diverse achievements of our students. These students have done so much to enrich our community and these awards are a fantastic way to recognise their many accomplishments.”

Of the winning nominations, Professor David Lomas, Vice-Provost (Health) and Head of SLMS said:
“The achievements of our students never ceases to amaze me. Of course I personally know our students to be immensely talented – indeed some of the best medical and biomedical students in the UK (if not the world!) – but to see their numerous achievements listed in black and white, ranging from publishing in international journals, to representing UCL and the School in international media and even securing over £100k in funding from industry – is truly remarkable and sets a high standard for future SLMS students.
Perhaps even more heartening are the incredible efforts many of our students have gone to in trying to engage and inspire the wider community. I’m deeply humbled by the level of service and altruism they have shown during their studies. Over the forthcoming month, you will read more about the spectacular work they have undertaken – I am sure you will agree with me that their achievements truly embody the spirit of SLMS.”
