UCL - Dean's Prize

The Dean's Prize supports overseas fee-paying students who have won a competitive scholarship to cover their stipend, by waiving the international fees.

The Dean’s Prize is available to students wishing to pursue research degrees in the Faculty of Mathematical & Physical Sciences, and the Faculty of Engineering.

Guidance for applicants

Applications for the Dean's Prize must include the following:

• Short (1 page maximum) description of your proposed research project

• Copy of your CV 

• 2 References

  • Reference number 1 should relate to your most recently completed university programme/degree (or the one you intend to complete, if applicable) and can be the same referee who submitted a reference as part of your admission application. Please use:

  • Reference number 2 should relate to your current or intended research programme/project, for which you are seeking funding. This reference MUST be provided by your research supervisor at UCL. Guidance for Academic Departments

• Written confirmation by the relevant Head of Department that they support the submission and agree to the shortfall in their budget due to the waiver of fees must be included in all applications 

• If your department is submitting more than one application, applications must be ranked in order of preference by Departmental Graduate Tutors before submission

Dean’s Prize – Faculty of Engineering

The UCL Engineering Postgraduate Research Scholarship for Excellence, commonly referred to as the "Dean's Prize", is the most prestigious scholarship awarded to postgraduate research students in the Faculty. It is designed to support overseas students who have received a competitive external scholarship covering their stipend by providing an effective fee waiver.

Two Dean’s Prizes will be allocated in 2024/25. If you have any questions about the Dean's Prize please contact the Departmental Graduate Tutor (DGT) in the department to which you are applying.

Please note that the Faculty of Engineering no longer supports the China Scholarships Council (CSC) funding scheme in conjunction with the Dean’s Prize.

Guidance for applicants

Students in Engineering should submit a single PDF to deans.prize@ucl.ac.uk. The application should be made by the student and must consist of the following:

• A short (200 words max) description of the proposed research project written for a non-specialist academic panel. This should be written by the applicant and not the prospective supervisor.
• Candidate CV. Where the CV lists prizes and honours these should come with some context (at least an indication of whether they relate to departmental, institutional, regional, national, or international awards, the number of recipients and so forth).
• Where possible, an indication of the international/national ranking of the institutions/departments previously attended by the applicant, clearly stating the ranking scheme used.
• Where possible, an indication of the ranking of the applicant in relation to the rest of their class for their previous higher education qualifications.
• A completed reference on the Research Scholarship Academic Reference form.

• Evidence of the award of another competitive scholarship to provide a stipend.
• A letter of support from the prospective supervisor

Applications should be submitted by Wednesday 28^th February 2024. A panel will be convened to judge applications and notify applicants by early April 2024.
