UCL IRDR to launch new BSc in Global Humanitarian Studies

13 January 2020

Our new undergraduate programme, the BSc in Global Humanitarian Studies, has received final approval and will begin recruiting students in the spring for the first intake in September 2021.

Refugee camp

This new IRDR programme aims to educate and train future generations of humanitarian leaders in the theory and practice of humanitarian action. Unique in the UK, it will equip students with knowledge that cuts across disciplines, critical, analytical and research skills and core competencies, grounded in practice in the field, to anticipate evolving and emerging humanitarian threats and manage widening vulnerability and crises response.

Students will study a broad range of subject areas, including:

  • inequality, social justice and ethics;
  • conflict and migration;
  • aid economics;
  • climate change impacts;
  • natural hazards;
  • health emergencies;
  • framing public policy;
  • social anthropology;
  • humanitarian crises response;
  • strategic planning and logistics;
  • data analysis and interpretation; and
  • managing organizations and projects
  • and will have the opportunity to specialise in two of four areas: digital science, management science, global health, anthropology and social science.

Led by the Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction, teaching will utilise the expertise of key UCL partners, including the Institute for Global Health, Institute of Education, School of Management and Departments of Anthropology and Statistical Science. This collaborative and multi-disciplinary approach will provide students with an exciting environment in which to learn, both across UCL and through our extensive external links.

The first cohort of students will arrive in September 2021, and the IRDR will be running a number of student-focused events to give potential applicants a taste of the programme and of the wider sector.

More details about the course will be available on the UCL prospectus website when applications open in March, but if you have any questions, please do contact us.
