ABUHC International Disaster Seminar - Charles Kelly

27 April 2012

Challenging Disaster: Approaches to Improving Disaster Recovery and Disaster Risk Reduction Friday 27th April at 1-2 pm in Room 218 of the UCL Chadwick Building This seminar will be hosted by the Aon Benfield UCL Hazard Centre and presented by Charles Kelly, a highly experienced disaster management consultant, who has worked in many parts of the world and has written a number of thought-provoking papers on various aspects of disasters.

Synopsis

At a policy level it is widely recognized that disaster risk reduction (DRR) needs to be incorporated into development programming and that disaster recovery needs to start immediately after a disaster. Yet, in practice, DRR can rarely be identified as part of the development process or product, and almost no attention is given to planning recovery despite the fact that the process and challenges of recovery are well documented. The presentation and ensuing discussions will cover how DRR and disaster recovery can be done in more effective and efficient ways, with examples from Tajikistan, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
