The Aon Benfield UCL Hazard Centre will advertise opportunities to study on their MSc in Geophysical Havards

Engineers without borders are an international development organisation that removes barriers to development through engineering. Their programmes provide opportunities for young people to learn about technology's role in tackling poverty. Supported by the EWB-UK community, members can work on projects around the globe.

Silk Cities is an exciting and collaborative new initiative. It is an independent contextual online platform which connects dispersed existing knowledge and ideas about the quality of the built environment in the Middle East and Central Asia. The initial thematic concerns are reconstruction and disaster risk reduction, urban design and planning, and addressing urban historical identity, as well as local initiatives. 

We aim to bridge the gap between generations and theory and practice, and to make an impact on the quality of the built environment through stimulating urban debates and ideas.

Silk Cities is an ongoing project. With the help of its community a number of events will be introduced.

Following the recent launch of the platform we are looking for enthusiastic volunteers with skills and creative ideas for the project development.

Dickie Whitaker is Director of the Financial Services Knowledge Transfer Network and the Lighthill Risk Network. He has held board positions in analytical, Broking and consulting services in London and New York with Guy Carpenter, one of the worlds largest reinsurance brokers. He left in 2010 to focus on activities with both the Lighthill Risk Network and Financial Services KTN.  Dickie has consulted on risk transfer mechanisms in several countries around the world and also for Insurance and Reinsurance companies in London.  In 2011 Dickie was one of the founders and Director of Oasis Loss Modelling Framework, a not for profit catastrophe modelling platform.

Joanna Faure Walker is a lecturer in risk and disaster reduction at the UCL Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR), where she is the director of their Post Graduate Certificate Course and she lectures the courses: 'Integrating Science into Risk and Disaster Reduction' and 'Natural and Anthropogenic Hazards and Vulnerability'.  Her main research interests include the mechanics of continental extension and how this relates to seismic hazard. Joanna has experience of working in the hazard and risk field in both academia and industry. She read Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge and then continued in academia as a NERC-funded PhD student in the Earth Sciences Department at UCL. Joanna then moved into the catastrophe modelling and insurance sector as an analyst for RMS (Risk Management Solutions); RMS produces numerical models that provide a statistical approach to quantifying risk. As an analyst, Joanna integrated scientific, insurance, and financial knowledge to provide risk analytics and portfolio management solutions for clients.  

A representative from Rescue Global will speak about employment and volunteering opportunities in Rescue Global , in addition to opportunities more generally in the NGO sector.
