URKI Funding Service: Key changes to grant application processes

14 November 2023

The introduction of UKRI's new Funding Service (TFS) platform, as part of its Simpler and Better Funding programme, has brought in some key changes affecting grant applications.

Changes to the amendments process

A key change in TFS affecting grant submissions is that applications will not be returned for amendment (e.g., if corrections, clarifications, or additional attachments are required). Whilst this was previously possible for applications submitted via Je-S, TFS does not support this functionality.

If any information is omitted or incorrectly presented, there is a risk the application could be scored unfavourably or rejected based on incomplete information.

Applicants submitting an application through the TFS portal are therefore advised to ensure that they have read and fully understood all funder requirements when preparing their application, making sure that all information is correctly presented, and that all formatting requirements are strictly adhered to.

To provide all applications with the best possible chance of success, we strongly advise that you allow plenty of time for the Pre-Award team to review and check the application so that where any errors or omissions are identified, these have a chance of being identified and addressed accordingly before final submission to UKRI.

Introduction of editor rights

In addition, as part of UKRI’s continuous improvements to the TFS system, an Editor option is being introduced in stages. Initially, Editor rights have been granted to Pre-Award office (Research Office) roles. This means our Award Services Pre-Award team can now apply minor changes, make improvements, and fix errors found at the review stage locally, instead of sending the full form back to the applicant with instructions on the changes that need to be made.

Whilst the full Project Team and other Departmental Administrators are currently unable to access TFS to help applicants edit forms, it is anticipated that this functionality will be introduced in the new year.
