Why study History at UCL?

We offer a diverse and exciting range of options. You can study history from ancient times to the present day, from Britain and Europe, to India, China and the Americas, and from many different angles – from the study of magic to warfare, from politics to material culture. We also provide opportunities to explore London history. UCL History has some of the best researchers in the world, with exciting projects happening all the time. You can read more about our research here.

What you will gain from study at UCL

You will benefit from small-group teaching and plenty of opportunities for one-to-one support and advice from your tutor. You will be taught by some of the world's leading experts in their fields, incorporating their own cutting-edge research into their teaching. We place particular importance on developing your writing skills and you will benefit from being in the heart of London. Many of our modules use the resources of the British Museum and the British Library, both being a short walk away.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching is by a combination of lectures and seminars or tutorials, depending on the module type. Assessment is by 'take home' examination and coursework. Survey and Thematic modules are year-long modules of 30 credits that may be taken for one term by half-year students, for reduced credit of 15 credits and with an essay instead of the examination. Advanced seminar modules often run in both Fall Term and Spring Term and all students take the same coursework assessments. There are no associated costs for these modules.

Modules in History

Please note that this guide lists a range of popular modules offered as a representative sample. It is not exhaustive and, since the guide is published ahead of time, module options may have changed, been deleted or replaced. If you have very specific study needs or require confirmation of module availability for 2023/24, you are strongly advised to get in touch with the relevant Affiliate contact, listed on this subject page, before making an application.

The modules listed here are subject to availability and may have changed or been replaced. Not all options will be available in any one year and new modules are regularly introduced. Please contact the UCL History Teaching and Learning Team at history.programmes@ucl.ac.uk for the latest information.

Please note that there may be additional access or membership fees associated with using external libraries and museums.
