Teaching at UCL takes place in English. Applicants are required to meet UCL's English language requirements, so that language difficulties do not hinder your study.
The following information gives English language requirement guidance for Study Abroad applicants.
Any student who is not a national of a UK Home Office majority English-speaking country is required to provide recent evidence of English language proficiency.
Evidence may take the form of one of:
- A minimum of 12 months of academic education leading to an awarded qualification, in a country that UCL considers to be 'majority English speaking' – a list of these countries can be found on the Undergraduate English language requirements page.
- An English language qualification (e.g. IELTS) that is recognised by UCL – a full list of qualifications and scores required can also be found on the Undergraduate English language requirements page.
Any of the above must have been taken no more than two years prior to the date of enrolment at UCL.
Students who will arrive on a Student Visa to study at UCL under an Erasmus agreement will be asked to satisfy the English language requirement at B2 Level or higher to meet the requirement of the programme and the UKVI.
Our English Language requirements are changing to a scale of 1 to 5. Applicants applying for entry from September 2023 onwards will be required to meet English Language proficiency on the 1-5 scale.
