Why study Fine Art at UCL?

You will work alongside students studying on the BA or BFA in Fine Art and specialise in painting, sculpture or fine art media (which includes electronic media, photography, print, film and video and sound). All Slade staff are actively involved in research and teaching and have a diverse range of interests and expertise. In addition to extensive academic facilities, UCL’s central London location enables easy access to world-class galleries, museums, libraries, theatres and cultural institutions.

What you will gain from study at UCL

You are expected to be highly motivated and able to work independently under the guidance of your personal tutor. Each subject area provides a focused environment in which to address the practice and theory of the subject. Students participate in a programme of seminars, visiting artists, gallery visits and workshops in addition to tutorials, and can opt to take a history and theory of art course within the department.

Teaching and assessment

Practice-based work is assessed at the end of your studies. Those following a history and theory of art course submit written work for assessment.

You will need to supply your own materials, although there is a Media Store which can loan equipment such as cameras. The cost of materials will depend upon your practice. You will also need to pay for entry to any galleries and exhibitions.

Modules in Fine Art

Please note that this guide lists a range of popular modules offered as a representative sample. It is not exhaustive and, since the guide is published ahead of time, module options may have changed, been deleted or replaced. If you have very specific study needs or require confirmation of module availability for 2024/25, you are strongly advised to get in touch with the relevant Affiliate contact, listed on this subject page, before making an application.

Students may specialise in painting, sculpture or fine art media. Please note: The Slade's programmes are non-modular. Students who select this programme take their full credit load in the Slade and cannot select modules from other UCL departments.
