Changes to pay and benefits

Equalised pay and benefits confirmed for UCL’s security, cleaning, portering and catering staff.

In October 2019, UCL confirmed that security, cleaning, portering and catering staff not already on equal terms with colleagues directly employed by UCL would receive the same, or equivalent pay and core benefits by August 2021. This followed successful talks between UCL and its contractors, Axis, CH&Co and Sodexo, and their recognised trade union UNISON. 

Most of these changes have already been put in place. The timetable for achieving parity of terms and conditions is as follows:

21 October 2019Announcement of UCL’s commitment to equalising pay and benefits for security, cleaning, portering and catering staff in line with directly employed staff.
1 December 2019Annual leave entitlement parity achieved.
23 March 2020Enhanced sickness benefits and coronavirus special leave parity achieved. 
1 April 2020 Pay / grading structures parity achieved.
August 2021Deadline for all remaining changes to pay and benefits, including Maternity and Paternity leave, and pension contributions.

The decision to harmonise pay and benefits is supported by Council, UCL’s governing body, and is fully funded by the university. It affects around 800 security, cleaning, portering and catering staff who work for our service providers. The sequencing of the implementation of equalised pay and benefits was agreed following feedback from UNISON about what is most important to their members.
