Tell us about your experience of applying for the Chevening scholarship

I was fortunate to receive the Chevening Scholarship, a prestigious award for emerging leaders to study for master's degrees in the UK. My awareness of the scholarship came from following individuals I admire who had previously won it, inspiring me to apply. The most significant impact of the Chevening Scholarship has been expanding my network and connecting me with a diverse and driven group of individuals. This has been incredibly motivating and has broadened my perspective. The application process was multi-staged, involving personal essays and interviews, which taught me the value of being clear and true to myself. When I received the scholarship, I felt a mixture of joy and relief after the demanding process, along with immense gratitude towards Chevening and those who supported me.

Why did you apply to the Political Science Department at UCL?
I chose UCL's Political Science Department for its blend of academic rigour and practical skills, focusing on merging theoretical knowledge with real-world political action.

What were your first impressions of the department?
The department impressed me with its range of professors, each with different interests and openness to engaging with students beyond the classroom.

What is the rest of your cohort like?
The cohort is diverse, with students from various backgrounds. It's fascinating how everyone's different past experiences in the real world contribute to our collective learning. As only a few of us, the classes are very personalised, and we are very close as a cohort.

What is the teaching and learning like?
UCL's teaching is interactive and research-driven, emphasising the development of analytical skills. The course uniquely combines theoretical knowledge with practical applications, focusing on global case studies.

What do you like best about your course so far?
The blend of academic theory and practical application, mainly through diverse case studies and the encouragement to relate coursework to our personal interests, has been most appealing.

What advice would you give overseas students wanting to study in the UK?
Choose a course that genuinely interests you. Engage fully in campus life, explore the UK, and immerse yourself in all available opportunities.

Would you recommend your programme to prospective students and why?
I highly recommend the program, especially to those with professional experience seeking new insights and skills. The program offers comprehensive coverage of public administration and allows for in-depth exploration of specific interests.

What are your career aspirations, and how do you envisage your master's helping with these?
I aim to work in areas addressing social problems, and I see this master's program as an essential educational step towards this objective. I aim to eventually contribute in roles within the state sector, consulting, or international organisations.

Was there anything you wish you knew about the application process?
The process is lengthier than expected, requiring patience. However, it's certainly worth the effort and time invested.

Where is your favourite study place on campus?
My favourite study spot is the OIE library, although I'm continuously discovering new areas and study spaces across the campus.

If you could implement one policy in the world today, what would it be?
I would focus on a policy to reduce criminality and violence in Latin America, addressing a critical and personal concern.
