IMF: Guardian of the International Monetary System

The presentation will provide an overview of the purpose and organization of the IMF before describing the IMF’s work on surveillance and more specifically on lending programs. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of some of the major contemporary policy issues facing the Fund.

The issues that will be covered include:
- Background, purpose, and function of the IMF
- The financing , organization, and structure of the IMF
- IMF operations in practice
- The IMFs surveillance activities and lending programs
- Special Drawing Rights
- The major policy issues that the IMF grapples with that affect the international monetary system including the global safety net and the issue of cross border capital and capital flow measures.
THE SPEAKER:
Robert Heath (former Deputy Director of the Statistics Department at the IMF)
Robert worked for 20 years at the IMF, retiring as Deputy Director in the IMF Statistics Department in 2016. Previously, he worked at the Bank of England and the U.K. Treasury.
