MSc SLS Career Bio Victoria Crofts

Victoria Crofts

After completing the MSc at UCL, I was thrilled to get my first job out in South West Essex working with a kind, knowledgeable and supportive paediatric team.  I enjoyed my role working in health centres and schools as it offered lots of learning opportunities as a new Band 5, working with a range of professionals such as teachers, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers and parents.  I was lucky enough to be offered further training in working with children who stammer as this had been an area of interest to me as a student when I had a placement at the Michael Palin Centre for Stammering.  It was there, under my supervisor Jane Harley that I was first introduced to working with clients with dysfluency.  I learnt so much from that placement and was inspired by observing Jane and the rest of the team in their work.  After a year in Essex I moved back to London and enjoyed my role in Westminster working in children’s centres, nurseries and clinics in the Early Years Team.  As part of this job I was able to get involved with training other professionals such as nursery staff and work alongside lots of amazing teaching staff and parents. I also liked the creativity and fun this role provided. In 2013 I joined the team at the Michael Palin Centre, to specialise in working with children and adults who stammer and continue to really love it! The role is interesting and diverse as, in addition to my clinical role, I am involved in research projects at the Centre, and also work as part of the teaching team, training SLTs both in the UK and abroad so life never gets dull. I enjoy supporting students at the Centre, hopefully so that they can see how fascinating this area of speciality is and feel my role on the committee of the South East and London Stammering CEN is a great chance to identify and provide CPD opportunities for myself and other SLTs across the area. The job can be busy, challenging and thought-provoking at times yet it continues to be a real privilege to work alongside families to support their children and collaborate with other skilled therapists and professionals to try to ensure children reach their true potential. I came into SLT because I wanted a career in which I could always be learning and growing my skills and I haven’t been disappointed, as there are always different papers to read, training to be undertaken and colleagues to learn from.
