DCAL consists of a multidisciplinary team of linguists, psychologists and neuroscientists. We are the largest Research Centre in this field in Europe.
We examine language, cognition and the brain from the unique perspective of deafness and deaf communication. This encourages a broader scientific perspective which leads to novel discoveries about language and cognition that could not be achieved from working with hearing people alone. We achieve this by bringing together a range of complementary scientific approaches and a diverse group of talented D/deaf and hearing scientists, support staff and students.
Our research aims are:
- To determine how communication (signed, spoken, written) and cognition are shaped by deafness
- To use this information to further educational and clinical practice and to create societal impact
