Could a solar eruption headed for Earth trigger a geomagnetic storm?

Dr Daniel Verscharen (UCL Space & Climate Physics) says: "Whenever we see a halo coronal mass ejection (CME), it means that the CME has been ejected more or less directly towards the Earth."
