Why did so many buildings collapse in the Izmir earthquake?

Reinforced concrete buildings are not built to a sufficient standard in Turkey, meaning that they are vulnerable to earthquakes, as seen in the recent Izmir earthquake in which many collapsed, says Dr Yasemin Aktas (UCL Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering).
