The “sleeping sickness” which affected nearly five million people

Encephalitis lethargica, or “sleeping sickness”, affected millions of people in the early 20th century. It rendered sufferers almost catatonic, but it’s still not entirely clear what caused it, explains Dr Jonathan Rogers (UCL Psychiatry).
