New shared space on Gordon Square, opening 8 May

17 April 2024

UCL Estates is pleased to announce that the Camden Council public realm project on the northside of Gordon Square, directly outside of the Institute of Archaeology, will officially open to the public on Wednesday 8 May.

This project has been led by Camden Council, with UCL being the funding partner, and forms a key piece of their investigations to pedestrianise Gordon Street. The full project, as envisioned by Camden Council, includes the change of use for the road, a design which includes new cycle lanes and the installation of plants and street furniture to enhance the public realm. The full project is a component of Camden Council’s Bloomsbury Green Corridor, within the Draft New Camden Local Plan (2024).

As a part of this project, UCL has worked extensively with LDA Design – Camden’s Highways Architect. As a key Council partner, they have led on a number of successful projects across London.

UCL has been working closely with Camden Council as a funding partner and has embraced the transformation of this space as a key part of the campus preparations to support the Bicentennial celebrations at UCL (2026).

'The UCL Institute of Archaeology is incredibly excited to have the area immediately outside of our building transformed into a vibrant pedestrianized space, with links to the wider Camden Council Green Corridor.'  Professor Kevin MacDonald, Director.

We are confident that this transformation will enhance the local area for our students, residents, and visitors.

This space is managed by UCL and we’d love to know what you think!
