As Pro-Provost (Health), Professor Abubakar provides additional senior academic leadership for UCL’s work with its health partners, becoming the senior point of connection for UCL’s wide range of health partners, in coordination with our Faculties. He will also lead the development of UCL’s health strategy, provide leadership to the Health Partnership team, and advise UMC on our relationship with the wider health system.

Professor Abubakar, a world leading scholar in the field of infectious disease epidemiology, joined UCL in 2012 as Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology, and became Director of the Institute of Global Health in 2016. He has also served as Vice-Dean (International and External Engagement) for the Faculty of Population Health Sciences before becoming Dean in 2021.

Welcoming his appointment, Dr Michael Spence, President & Provost of UCL, said: “This is a vital role for UCL, and I am really delighted that we have been able to appoint a Pro-Provost with the experience, knowledge and global reputation that is commensurate with our work with our world-leading health partners. Ibrahim brings an in-depth understanding of the NHS and UK public health landscape to this role, as well as a track record of far-reaching global health impact. I am very much looking forward to working with him to develop UCL’s crucial health partnerships and the far-reaching benefits that they deliver.”

Professor Abubakar said: “I am delighted to take on this leadership responsibility. I am looking forward to working with our local, national and international partners and coordinating with colleagues across UCL’s faculties and the leadership team to deliver health impact."
