This work has focussed on buildings with low out of hours occupancy and is one of a number of initiatives aiming to address recent significant increases in UCL’s energy costs. As such, it supports financial sustainability in the context of the Strategic Plan, as well as our commitment to reducing operational carbon emissions.

After an extended period of consultation involving our FM colleagues, Directors of Operations, and a variety of building users/ managers, the following timings have been agreed:

We remain committed to ensuring that there are no unreasonable impacts on teaching, research or other key activities:

What happens if I need to work late?

The buildings listed above will be locked outside the opening hours and standard access cards will not work. Alternative workspace, including Teams-enabled meeting rooms, is available for all UCL staff at Bidborough House (2nd floor); and also at Maple House (7th floor) – card access has been updated accordingly. Student study space is available 24/7 at the Student Centre with evening and weekend openings in a variety of library spaces across the campus.

We understand that these changes may require some adjustments to working arrangements in a small number of cases, but it is increasingly urgent that we address the significant pressures on UCL’s energy budget to minimise additional impacts on our core activities.
