Deniz Akinci, Students' Union UCL's Union Affairs Officer 2022/23

What are you studying, why are you interested in this subject and what do you plan to do in the future?

I have studied Law at UCL and graduated with an LL.B. in 2022. My passion for justice, and interest in developing efficient systems for facilitating the behaviour of entities have been the inspiration behind this decision. I plan to work in the area of Legal Tech in the future.

What is the most interesting thing you’ve done, seen or got involved with while at UCL?

The most interesting part of my UCL journey was my involvement with societies. The breadth of experience, responsibility, and opportunities for friendship they entail is not to be underestimated.

Have you discovered any hidden gems during your time at UCL?

The Periodicals Room of the Senate House Library was probably the best gem I discovered during my time here.

Give us your top three things to do/see/go to in London

  • Go for a walk at night from Trafalgar Square, through St James’s Park and finish at the Westminster Bridge.
  • Enjoy the Portobello Road Market.
  • Do not neglect the British Museum!

What’s one thing you’d like to see in a post-Covid world?

A better appreciation for human connection.

Who inspires you and why?

Marcus Aurelius. To me, and many others, he exemplifies a life lived with virtue, a strong sense of brotherhood felt towards mankind, and resilience in the face of tragedy.

What would it surprise people to know about you?

I used to be a very committed player of World of Warcraft.
