Improving your security with MFA

4 March 2022

We take online security seriously at UCL and are always looking for ways to provide additional defences to our protected systems and your data. We are pleased to announce that secure multi factor authentication (MFA) is coming to all UCL student and alumni email accounts.

Multi-factor authentication is a secure method of logging into your account which uses your password (something you know) and a second authenticator on a device (something you have ) to stop attackers from using your account if they know your password.

MFA is not designed to be intrusive, or demanding. Once you have registered, MFA will trust the device you typically use, and your location. All UCL’s managed devices are always deemed secure regardless of their location.

MFA is already in use by all staff and we now want to roll out the feature to the rest of the UCL community. You may already be using this kind of security check with many of your other accounts and logins.

For further information about MFA please check our Stay Secure pages

All current students and UCL alumni accounts will receive a personal email invitation from Information Services Division (ISD) to enrol in the coming weeks.
