Spotlight on... Ben Stubbs
4 March 2021
This week we meet Ben Stubbs, who is Senior Sustainability Manager, leading UCL’s work on improving the sustainability of the Built Environment. Here, he chats to us about UCL East, Provence, and singing on Broadway.
What is your role and what does it involve?
I lead UCL’s work on improving the sustainability of our Built Environment – helping to reduce the impact of our construction projects and the operation of our estate.
How long have you been at UCL and what was your previous role?
I’ve been part of Sustainable UCL and working within UCL Estates for the past six years. Before that I worked in design and engineering consultancy for a number of years.
What working achievement or initiative are you most proud of?
The Student Centre was the first project I’ve worked on to achieve a ‘BREEAM Outstanding’ rating for exemplary environmental performance. Only a small handful of other universities have achieved this so far.
Tell us about a project you are working on now which is top of your to-do list?
Not that I have favourites (!) but I’ve been closely involved with work on UCL East for a number of years and it’s set to be a great model for sustainable campuses. Things are really taking shape and I’m looking forward to spending some time there.
What is your favourite album, film and novel?
Album: I like a bit of Manu Chao!; Film: The Nightmare Before Christmas; Novel: The Line of Beauty.
What is your favourite joke (pre-watershed)?
My boss wanted me to come up with a set of steps that we could use to save the environment…
So I created an Al Gore-ithm.
Who would be your dream dinner guests?
Judi Dench, Caroline Lucas, Bill Gates… and perhaps Lady Gaga!
What advice would you give your younger self?
Don’t try to fulfil other people’s expectations.
What would it surprise people to know about you?
A long time ago, I was a singer on Broadway.
What is your favourite place?
Ooh – so many! Currently Provence – I could happily go back again and again.
