UCL staff and alumni recognised in 2021 New Year Honours

Professor David Ormerod QC (UCL Laws) has been appointed a CBE for services to criminal justice.

A Professor of Criminal Justice at UCL and co-director of the UCL Judicial Institute, Professor Ormerod is also a Deputy High Court Judge and between 2010 and 2019 served as the Criminal Law Commissioner for England and Wales.

Professor Ramani Moonesinghe (UCL Surgery & Interventional Science) has been made an OBE for services to anaesthesia, perioperative and critical care.

She is Head of the Centre for Perioperative Medicine and Head of the Department of Targeted Intervention, both at UCL.  Professor Moonesinghe is also the NHS England / NHS Improvement’s National Clinical Director for Critical Care and an honorary Consultant Anaesthetist at University College London Hospitals NHS Trust.

Commenting on her award, Professor Moonesinghe said: "I am immensely grateful for the support I've received from my friends and colleagues at UCL and UCLH.

"I am lucky to work with so many phenomenal local colleagues driving forward perioperative care, and to have had the chance to play a small role in the national effort to support critical care in this incredibly challenging year."

Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Professor Mark Emberton, added: “Ramani is a model clinical academic - greatly valued as a great doctor, hugely admired as an inspirational researcher.”

Professor Mohan Edirisinghe (UCL Mechanical Engineering) has been awarded an OBE for services to biomedical engineering.

He is Bonfield Chair of Biomaterials at UCL and is both a Fellow of The Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK and a Fellow of The European Academy of Sciences.

On receiving his honour, Professor Edirisinghe said: "I am indebted to UCL and in particular to UCL Mechanical Engineering from where I have been able to rapidly propagate my research on healthcare and manufacturing internationally to a wide interdisciplinary audience, this has enabled me to get this honour."

Professor Lorraine Sherr (UCL Institute for Global Health) has been made an MBE for services to vulnerable children and families.

A Professor of Clinical and Health Psychology, she runs the Health Psychology Unit at UCL. At the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic as part of the UKRI Global Challenges Research Fund team, Professor Sherr and others, put together COVID-19 parenting tips, reaching over 134 million users and keeping the mental health and child development issues to the forefront amidst isolation and lockdown.

On receiving her honour, Professor Sherr said: "I am quite humbled by this award as my work is a mosaic put together with the endeavours of many.

"This will only spur me on to continue: when we obliterate vulnerability then my work will be done. Until then it is our collective responsibility to ensure that no family, no child and no-one who is destitute stands alone; there must always be a resource to provide for them and their children."
