Smoke-Free UCL
20 March 2019
In response to the changing culture around smoking and a wider acceptance in the community of the hazards of smoking and the importance of protecting the health of the UCL community, UCL is proposing a new smoking policy under the rubric ‘Smoke-Free UCL’.
To promote the health and wellbeing of its staff, students, contractors and visitors, UCL currently operates a no smoking policy which bans smoking or being in possession of lit cigarettes, cigars or pipes in any premises occupied or used by UCL staff, students and visitors, or in UCL vehicles. This extends to areas immediately outside the entrances or open windows of any such premises. The ban also includes use of e-cigarettes.
In response to the changing culture around smoking and a wider acceptance in the community of the hazards of smoking and the importance of protecting the health of the UCL community, UCL is proposing a new smoking policy under the rubric ‘Smoke-Free UCL’.
This policy has two key components:
- Extending the area in which smoking and use of e-cigarettes is not permitted to the whole of the UCL estate including all public spaces and outdoor spaces.
- Providing high quality information and support for staff and students at UCL who smoke to help them quit.
It is planned to implement Smoke-Free UCL from the start of the next academic year. We are now consulting the UCL community on the proposal so that it meets our needs and accords with our values.
Join us at a Town Hall meeting on 4 April to be part of the discussion.
