In memory of Cath Dean

8 August 2019

We are sad to report the death of Cath Dean, a former Events Manager in UCL Communications and Marketing and one of the first members of Astrea’s Steering Committee.

Cath Dean

Cath worked in the Events team in UCL Communications & Marketing from January 2012 until July 2017. Colleagues remember her as a practical, supportive and encouraging manager and a funny, fierce and passionately feminist colleague. She was a firm believer in the power of collaboration and innovation, and her work on UCL’s iconic Lunch Hour Lectures transformed them into a firm favourite on UCL’s events calendar – “Lunch Hour Lectures on tour” wouldn’t have happened without Cath’s vision and hard work. Cath will be remembered for her numerous charity fundraising runs, love of cats, superb earring collection and penchant for ridiculously weak tea.

She was one of the first members of the Astrea network for women in UCL Professional Services and was instrumental in setting up the Astrea Conference in 2016, which featured inspirational talks from Sophie Walker (founder of the Women’s Equality Party) and Professor Sue Black among others. She was also an active member of the Women’s Higher Education Network (WHEN).

Cath died at home from breast cancer on July 23 2019, aged 42, and is survived by her husband James and two daughters.

A memorial will be held for Cath on Monday 12 August, with full details here: https://www.poetic-endings.com/cath-deans-funeral. In addition, colleagues who would like to make a donation to Refuge in memory of Cath can do so at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/cath-dean.
