8 November 2018

Adrienne Shum is a current student (BSc Psychology) who reached out to a mentor - read on to find out why she would recommend it.

Finding your alumni mentor

If you're looking for in-depth, tailored careers advice, the UCL Alumni Online Community is a great place to start. It is an exclusive networking platform that offers the opportunity for both students and graduates to connect: you can search for UCL alumni working in specific sectors or industries, who are willing to offer academic and professional advice and act as mentors.

What were your reasons for requesting an alumni mentor?
I study psychology and it is a pretty broad and flexible subject. As a final year who is aiming to do a Phd, I'm a bit lost as to what I have to do before getting my postgraduate degree. I thought it would be helpful if there was someone to direct me to the experiences I need in order to gain relevant competencies.

How often have you in contact and what do you talk about?
I've been in contact with my mentor once. She has given me some insight to what a clinical psychologist does in the country I want to work in (non-UK). We touched upon topics such as working experience required before I can pursue a PhD degree.

What are the benefits of having a mentor?
To know someone who has probably gone through exactly what you're going right now. It's immensely helpful to have someone in your dream career giving you tips on how to get there.

And finally, do you have any advice for any students or alumni who might be thinking of requesting a mentor?
Stalk their Linkedin first so you can get straight to the point and ask specific questions related to their experiences!

To find your alumni mentor register now for the UCL Alumni Online Community and search the directory for your perfect match. There is no limit to the number of potential mentors you can contact or how often you use the service.
