How has spoken English changed over the last 50 years?

3 October 2017

Help needed with recording native speakers for the London-Lund Corpus 2 Would you like to be part of a major study into how spoken English has changed over the last half century? The London-Lund Corpus was the world's first collection of spoken language texts, and recordings for the corpus were made right here at University College London.

Mobile Phone Conversation Web

Almost 50 years on, researchers are now looking to compile a comparable corpus to see how spoken English has changed and are looking to recruit participants for the last stage of the project, which will add a modern twist to the corpus by including mobile phone calls, Internet voice calls and Skype video calls.

This is a very important project since spoken corpora were not compiled systematically after the 1990s and there is a general lack of spoken data available for people to research and study.

Participants can choose to have a conversation with whoever they like, a friend, a family member, or a colleague, and talk about anything in the world, from their studies to global politics, for at least 30 minutes (one long call or several shorter ones).

There is absolutely no risk associated with participating in the study and all the speakers in the conversation are granted full anonymity. The only requirements are that the speakers are adults and native speakers of British English.

All participants will receive a £10 Amazon gift voucher.
