UCL community recognised in Queen's Birthday Honours

Professor Alimuddin Zumla (UCL Infection & Immunity) has been awarded a knighthood for his services to public health and protection from infectious diseases. Professor Sir Alimuddin Zumla, who is also a Consultant Infectious Diseases Physician at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, is a global leader in the field of life-threatening infectious diseases. He has made very significant contributions to the fields of TB, TB/HIV co-infection and other infections with epidemic potential. 

As a committed advocate for improving health services for poor and disadvantaged populations globally, he has also supported research, capacity development and training programmes in sub-Saharan Africa, and has united a global faculty to work together on poverty related diseases and emerging and re-emerging infections. 

Speaking about the knighthood, Professor Sir Alimuddin Zumla, said: "I am absolutely delighted to be accorded this wonderful honour. It's awe-inspiring and a great privilege to be together with exceptional people who have distinguished themselves, serving humanity in different ways with great commitment and impact." 

"I would like to share this honour with the numerous selfless and committed people across the world, who I work with effectively on a range of academic, capacity development, advocacy and charity activities on poverty-related diseases. I am blessed with a very supportive family, excellent research teams and awesome, talented friends who have shown 'unity of purpose' for improving the lives and health of disadvantaged populations worldwide."

• Alexandra Marks (UCL Judicial Institute Advisory Board) - CBE for public services.
• Professor Nigel Hunt (UCL Eastman Dental Institute) - OBE for services to dentistry and to the specialty of orthodontics. 
• Professor Adrienne Flanagan (UCL Cancer Institute) - OBE for services to cancer research.
• Neil Peter May (UCL Bartlett School of Environment, Energy & Resources) - MBE for services to sustainability and energy efficiency in buildings and communities.

• Yvette Nyantah Twumasi-Ankrah (PhD Sociology 2018) - MBE for services to women in business.
• Dr Roger Morgan (UCL BSc Chemistry 1973 & MPhil Chemistry 1976) - BEM for voluntary service to the arts in Herefordshire.
• Jean Lazzara (UCL Bachelor of Arts 1970) - BEM for services to the British community in Naples.
