Construction starts on new Student Centre
15 January 2016
Work will get underway next month (February 2016) to deliver the new Student Centre and will continue for the next two years on the Bloomsbury campus.
The new Student Centre will enhance the student experience by creating new study areas for both quiet and social study. Students will be able to find their own place where they can work in a way that suits them best, enriching the more formal teaching and learning through supporting self-learning. It will incorporate 1,000 study spaces, student enquiry services, plus other facilities including a café and IT clusters.
Designed by Nicholas Hare Architects, the centre will provide state-of-the-art facilities for students and staff. Mace, the international consultancy and construction company, has been appointed to deliver this flagship project.
Ahead of the construction of the new Student Centre, early works are required to clear the site and make space for the new facility. These works will include demolishing the existing Node staircase to the rear of the Bloomsbury Theatre, removing a section of the ACBE plant room, and the diversion of services that run across the existing site.
Works will progress with the establishment of site hoarding around the perimeter of the affected areas, after which scaffold erection and demolition will start. During the course of this project UCL Estates and Mace are committed to working with the rest of UCL to mitigate the effects of construction on students and staff.
Mace are using methods to predict noise levels of all construction activities and are putting measures in place to reduce impact. Discussions with Camden Council regarding noise, dust and vibration monitoring are also ongoing.
