Immigration changes: information for UCL staff

17 June 2014

Further changes to the points-based immigration regime were announced last month by the Home Office.

In response to this, a new UCL managers' guide to checking right to work documents has been produced and uploaded onto the HR website. This incorporates guidance from and replaces the previous two documents: the right to work department guide and the right to work managers guide.

This document incorporates new rules on:

1. Acceptable documents for checking the right to work

2. The requirement for a valid visa to be in a current (not expired) passport

3. Mandatory requirement to date and sign original documents

4. Requirements to retain a copy of term and vacation dates alongside the document checks for international students

5. The frequency of follow up checks

6. The necessity for a positive verification notice from the employer checking service where the employee or applicant has:

  • an outstanding application or appeal with the Home Office which was made at the correct time
  • presented an Application Registration Card (ARC) which states that the holder is allowed to work
  • presented a Certificate of Application issued to or for a family member of an EEA or Swiss national which states that the holder is allowed to work.

Departmental staff undertaking right to work checks as part of the local recruitment and selection process must familiarise themselves with the new guidance.

For further information and support on these matters please contact your HR ECA Supervisor.
