UCL welcomes Year 12 pupils from across the UK to Biosciences

11 September 2012

Last month the UCL Outreach Office, in partnership with the Sutton Trust and Wolfson Foundation, welcomed 38 Year 12 students from across the UK to the first Biosciences residential summer school.

The Outreach Office worked closely with Dr Chris Taylorson and Dr Amanda Cain (UCL Biosciences) to develop a week of activities that would challenge participants academically and provide them with an insight into studying Biosciences at UCL.

The work started immediately with 'Grill an Academic' interviews on the first afternoon. The interviews, with academics and researchers from the university, formed the basis of group work that culminated in presentations at the end of the week. This experience gave participants a chance to develop key skills, while learning about the research and careers of UCL academics.

Participants also took part in laboratory work, taster lectures and HE sessions, and were supported throughout by a team of current Biosciences undergraduates. The group enjoyed evening activities that showcased the best of what London has to offer. The highlight was a trip to watch Matilda: The Musical at Cambridge Theatre.

Dr Chris Taylorson said: "The youngsters attending the summer school were all extremely able and very motivated. They applied themselves brilliantly to the laboratory tasks. I watched the students grow in confidence throughout the week and feel confident that all would cope with life at UCL." The feedback from the participants has been very positive, and the Outreach Office is planning to replicate the summer school in the future.
