UCL in 4th place in world university rankings

11 September 2012

UCL has been ranked 4th in the QS 2012/13 World University Rankings, published today.

UCL Quad UCL was one of four UK institutions in the top ten, along with Cambridge (2nd), Oxford (5th) and Imperial (6th). MIT overtook Cambridge and Harvard to be ranked as the world's number one university.

UCL Provost Malcolm Grant said: "The methodology behind the various university league tables is always questionable, but the QS world rankings are one of the most highly cited. What is remarkable is for London to have two institutions in the top ten. I am delighted of course with UCL's showing - and also Imperial's - but of wider significance is that this outcome provides a base-point for comparison with London's major rivals as global cities, particularly New York.

"These rankings also confirm the view that higher education, science, research, technology and health are all remarkable strengths of London, every bit as strong as financial services."

Professor David Price, UCL Vice-Provost (Research), said: "UCL's high ranking reflects its success in delivering its mission as London's Global University, and in particular: its strengthening academic reputation across all subject areas, all ranked higher by QS assessors than last year; the high impact of its research as measured by citations; its excellent staff-student ratio; and its exceptionally international student and staff body.

"These qualities are all key aspects of the UCL Research Strategy, which aims to develop leadership founded in excellence, empower cross-disciplinarity grounded in expertise, and realise the impact of a global university.

"In addition, our success in the recent European Research Council Starting Investigator Awards - with more awards for exceptional early career researchers (17) than any other university in Europe - confirms the growing strength of our academic position from a very different perspective, and indeed the strength of our UK peers, who also did well."
